A development audit is an internal review that helps you evaluate the current status of your fund-raising program against its potential for success. This in-depth review helps you “take the pulse” of your development program and assesses its effectiveness to date.
Before the development audit, a review of the following items is completed:

 ♦   Organization charts and procedures
 ♦   Job descriptions
 ♦   Past staff and board activities
Before the development audit, a review of the following items is completed:

 ♦   Vision, mission and short and long-term goals
 ♦   Results of major gifts, general gifts and annual support programs
 ♦   Strategic planning for research, cultivation, public awareness, planned giving and grants
 ♦   Activities and accomplishments
 ♦   Attitudes and knowledge
 ♦   Budgets
After the development audit, a final report is written to include:
 ♦   Interviewees’ responses
 ♦   The process
 ♦   Specific findings
 ♦   Conclusions
 ♦   Recommendations
The Development Audit report becomes a guide for program changes, initiatives, leadership, budgeting, evaluation, staffing, and the management, training and motivation of volunteers.
